What Is Mul Cotton?
Mul cotton is a lightweight, loosely woven plain-weave cotton fabric originally made in Multan (present-day Pakistan). The word "mul" derives from "Multan," where weavers first perfected this gossamer-thin cloth centuries ago. Today, mul cotton is produced across India — particularly in West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra — and has become the most sought-after fabric for everyday cotton sarees.
What Makes Mul Cotton Different from Regular Cotton?
Unlike standard cotton, mul cotton uses a loose, open weave with a lower thread count per inch. This gives it three distinct qualities:
- Extreme breathability — air passes freely through the weave, keeping you cool even in 40°C Mumbai summers
- Feather-light weight — a typical mul cotton saree weighs just 250–400 grams
- Soft, flowing drape — it falls naturally without stiffness, making it easy to pleat and drape
How Is Mul Cotton Made?
Mul cotton is woven on a plain loom using fine, single-ply cotton yarn. The yarn count typically ranges from 80s to 120s — the higher the count, the finer and softer the fabric. After weaving, mul is usually given a light sizing (starch treatment) for crispness, which softens after the first wash.
What Does Mul Cotton Feel Like?
Mul cotton feels crisp yet soft — similar to a freshly laundered handkerchief. It has a slight transparency when held to light. After washing, it becomes progressively softer and more comfortable with each wear.
Is Mul Cotton Good for Sarees?
Yes. Mul cotton is considered ideal for everyday sarees for three reasons:
- It drapes beautifully without the heaviness of silk or the stiffness of synthetic fabrics
- It absorbs sweat and dries quickly — essential in India's humid climate
- It is machine-washable and requires no dry cleaning
At Luckshri, all our mul cotton sarees are sourced from certified handloom weavers and carry a natural soft finish without chemical treatment.
Mul Cotton vs. Organic Cotton Sarees — What's the Difference?
"Mul cotton" refers to the weave structure (loose plain weave). "Organic cotton" refers to how the raw cotton was grown (without pesticides). A saree can be both — a mul-woven organic cotton saree. At Luckshri, we offer both mul cotton and certified organic cotton sarees depending on your preference.
How Should I Care for a Mul Cotton Saree?
Mul cotton is low-maintenance. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle (or by hand), dry in shade, and iron on medium heat while slightly damp. Avoid bleach or harsh detergents. Full washing guide here →
