How to Wash a Mul Cotton Saree at Home
Mul cotton sarees are one of the easiest sarees to care for at home. Unlike silk or Banarasi sarees, mul cotton does not require dry cleaning. Follow these steps to keep your mul cotton saree soft, vibrant, and long-lasting.
What You Need
- Cold or lukewarm water (never hot)
- Mild liquid detergent or baby shampoo
- A clean bucket or basin (for hand wash) or a washing machine with gentle cycle
- A shaded drying area
- A medium-heat iron
Step-by-Step: Hand Washing Mul Cotton Saree
- Separate colors. Wash dark or bright sarees separately for the first 2–3 washes to prevent color bleeding.
- Soak for 10 minutes. Add a few drops of mild detergent to cold water. Submerge the saree and gently agitate with your hands. Do not scrub.
- Rinse twice. Rinse in clean cold water until no detergent remains. Add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the final rinse to fix colors and remove any soap residue.
- Remove excess water. Do not wring or twist. Instead, gently press the saree between your palms or roll it in a dry towel to absorb water.
- Dry in shade. Hang to dry away from direct sunlight. Direct sun causes fading and weakens cotton fibers over time.
Can I Machine Wash Mul Cotton Sarees?
Yes. Use the delicate or gentle cycle with cold water. Place the saree inside a mesh laundry bag to prevent tangling. Use a mild liquid detergent — avoid powder detergents as they can be harsh on fine cotton. Do not use the spin cycle at high speed.
How to Iron a Mul Cotton Saree
Iron mul cotton while it is still slightly damp — this is the secret to a crisp, wrinkle-free finish without effort. Set the iron to medium heat (cotton setting). Iron on the reverse side to protect any prints or embroidery. Never iron a bone-dry mul cotton saree as this can scorch the fibers.
Can I Use Fabric Softener on Mul Cotton?
You can, but it is not necessary. Mul cotton naturally softens after every wash. If you do use a softener, dilute it well — concentrated softener can leave residue that makes the fabric feel heavy. A teaspoon of hair conditioner in the final rinse works as a gentle natural softener.
How Often Should I Wash a Mul Cotton Saree?
After every wear if you have sweated in it. For light, brief wear, mul cotton can be aired out and re-worn 2–3 times before washing. Unlike synthetic fabrics, mul cotton breathes and does not hold odors.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Hot water — causes shrinkage and color fading
- ❌ Wringing or twisting — distorts the weave and causes permanent creases
- ❌ Drying in direct sun — fades colors, especially hand-block prints
- ❌ Harsh detergents or bleach — weakens fibers and strips natural softness
- ❌ Ironing bone dry — difficult to press and risks scorching
Storing Mul Cotton Sarees
Store mul cotton sarees neatly folded in a cotton or muslin bag. Avoid plastic covers — cotton needs to breathe. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines. Add a neem sachet or lavender pouch to deter moths naturally.
